1. an affected style of speaking and writing English that was fashionable in England in the late 1500's, characterized by long series of antitheses, frequent similes, and alliteration. Example: Be valiant but not too venturous. Let thy attire be comely but not costly (John Lyly).
2. Figurative. any affected, elegant style of writing; flowery, artificial language.
3. a euphuistic phrase or composition.
